The Nigerian Drums Festival took place at the Ogun State Cultural Centre through the 19th – 22nd of April 2016, it was one of epic proportions. This maiden edition organized by the Ministry of culture and tourism Ogun State showcased the richness of the Nigerian cultural diversity with the participation of 19 states of the federation and hundreds of drummers each endowed with its own unique style, performance and antics. Headline performances include Ara, the female talking drum artist and other cultural dance groups.
The festival had a theme of ”reviving our culture in drums” Which is the historical form of communication and form of entertainment within the Yoruba people and other tribes. The festival also aimed at promoting Nigerian rich cultural heritage and tourism. The highpoint of the event was the unveiling of the world’s tallest drums measuring 16 and 17 feet tall, unveiled by the Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun. Others who witnessed the event were the Ooni of Ife and his Olori, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ambassadors from various African countries including South Africa and Ghana, Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation(NTDC), Mrs Sally Mbanefo was also present, amongst commissioners and chieftains.
